Irrigation Consultants
An irrigation consultant is an independent hydraulic and agronomic engineer that designs, specifies and audits commercial irrigation systems — from source to emitter — separately from any equipment supplier.
Independent, supplier-neutral guidance. Vendor identities, price bands and shortlists are released only through the RFQ flow.
Role in the project
Consultants own the hydraulic and agronomic basis of design and translate it into procurement-ready specifications, protecting the buyer during multi-supplier tenders.
Typical applications
- Greenhouse irrigation & fertigation
- Open-field drip and pivot design
- Water storage & reservoir engineering
- Water rights and permitting
Selection criteria
No revenue share from equipment suppliers on the project.
Crop water requirement (ETc) modelled with local climate data.
Engineering considerations
Source, storage, peak-day demand and losses reconciled before pipe sizing.
Commercial considerations
Typically 3–6% of irrigation CAPEX for owner's engineer scope.
Procurement considerations
Bill of quantities and technical spec ready before RFQ.
Common mistakes
- •Skipping water quality analysis before design
- •Sizing on textbook Kc instead of local ET
FAQ
- Do I need a consultant if my irrigation supplier does design?
- For projects above USD 250K or where debt is involved, yes — the consultant protects the buyer against supplier bias.
