Commercial greenhouse buyer questions: cost, financing, climate and agronomy
Short answers for professional growers and investors planning a commercial greenhouse. Each answer explains what drives the number and links to the calculator or dated briefing that lets you test it with your own inputs. Calculator results are indicative planning scenarios, not quotes, agronomic advice or supplier guarantees. Capital projects start at USD 250,000; the buyer service is free.
Cost
- What decides the cost of a commercial greenhouse?
- Area, structure type and height, covering, design loads, the climate package (ventilation, cooling, heating, screens, controls), irrigation and fertigation, site works and delivery terms. Two quotes are only comparable when they price the same written scope, currency and Incoterm.Greenhouse cost calculator
- Can I get a reliable price per square metre before an RFQ?
- Only a planning range. Our calculator shows an indicative scenario from the inputs you choose; a real price needs a site, a specification and supplier responses to the same RFQ.Greenhouse cost calculator
- How do energy and fertilizer prices change the business case?
- They drive running costs over the life of the project. Our dated October 2026 briefing summarises published World Bank commodity data and shows how to run a sensitivity check; global indices are context, not your local tariff.October 2026 procurement briefingBriefing archive
Financing
- Does SeedMatch lend money or guarantee financing?
- No. We are not a lender. We can help you prepare a project file and explain possible financing pathways; any approval, rate or term is decided by the financing institution after its own assessment.Agricultural financing
- What do lenders usually ask for in a greenhouse project?
- A defined scope and budget, site and water evidence, a crop and market plan, operating-cost assumptions, the sponsor's equity and experience, and comparable supplier offers. A structured RFQ produces much of this documentation.
- How should payment milestones be structured?
- Link payments to verifiable stages — design approval, delivery, installation and written acceptance tests — and keep a final share until commissioning is accepted. Terms are agreed in your contract, not set by SeedMatch.
Climate control
- How is evaporative pad-and-fan cooling sized?
- From the required airflow and the pad face velocity. Our climate calculator uses editable defaults of 150 m³/h of airflow per m² of floor and 1.5 m/s pad velocity; at 1 hectare that gives 1,500,000 m³/h and roughly 278 m² of pad. Replace the defaults with your engineer's design values.Greenhouse climate calculator
- Which climate package does my site need?
- It depends on local temperature and humidity extremes, solar load, the crop's target range and energy prices. Hot-dry sites often rely on evaporative cooling; cold or humid sites need heating, screens and dehumidification. This is a design decision for qualified engineers.
- Do I need a climate computer?
- Most commercial projects use one to control vents, screens, cooling, heating and fertigation from sensor data. Specify the sensor list, control zones and data access in the RFQ so offers are comparable.
Agronomy
- Will the greenhouse reach a specific yield?
- No supplier or calculator can guarantee yield. Marketable output depends on crop and variety, climate control, water quality, nutrition, plant protection and management. Use yield figures only from comparable local operations and treat them as assumptions.
- Why does water quality matter before buying?
- Salinity, alkalinity and specific ions decide whether you need water treatment and which fertigation strategy works. Commission a laboratory water analysis before the RFQ so treatment is priced from the start.
- Where can I find independent agronomic guidance?
- FAO's Good Agricultural Practices for greenhouse vegetable crops covers climate, irrigation, nutrition and plant protection. Your agronomist should adapt it to your crop and site.

Turn your answers into a reviewed RFQ
Submit one project brief. Our team reviews it, contacts suitable suppliers for you and presents organised responses — there is no direct buyer-to-supplier contact.
- 1. Share crop, hectares, site and timeline.
- 2. We review the brief and confirm it is a commercial project (from USD 250K).
- 3. You receive comparable, supplier-neutral proposals — free for buyers.
