Seed market data: land, yields, production and seed trade

Compare up to five countries over 5, 10, 20 or 30 years using cached official statistics. Every number shows its source, unit, underlying year and when we fetched it. Where data is not available we say so instead of filling the gap.

Historical case studies for procurement planning

Documented past events, each linked to its source. The planning notes are our general guidance, not findings of the sources.

2022, Netherlands

Energy prices cut greenhouse vegetable output

Statistics Netherlands reported 2022 gross greenhouse vegetable output down 7.9% to 1.8 million tonnes; tomatoes fell 12.5% (to 770 million kg) and cucumbers 9.1%, as high energy prices made growers start crops later and end them earlier. CBS, 2023

Planning note: Test heating demand against several energy-price scenarios before choosing crop schedules, screens or heating systems.

ToBRFV emergency measures for tomato and pepper seed

After tomato brown rugose fruit virus spread, the EU adopted emergency measures requiring official checks on tomato and pepper seed, later replaced by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1191. EUR-Lex

Planning note: Specify required seed health tests and phytosanitary documents in the RFQ, not after shipment.

Black Sea Grain Initiative

The UN-brokered initiative, signed in Istanbul on 22 July 2022, reopened Ukrainian Black Sea grain exports until it ended in July 2023. United Nations

Planning note: When one origin or route dominates, compare alternative origins and allow longer lead times in the procurement plan.

Methodology and decision notes

  • Figures are shown as published by each source for the stated year; we do not adjust for inflation, convert currencies or fill gaps.
  • National averages (for example cereal yield) hide large regional and farm differences; use them for market context, not for a site's yield or payback.
  • Customs trade codes (HS 1209, HS 120991) cover seed for sowing as declared at the border. They are not certified-seed statistics and include values, not volumes of a specific crop.
  • For a project decision, combine market context with your own site inputs in a calculator, then confirm figures with written supplier quotations.

Questions about this data

Where does this data come from?
Land, yield and production series come from the World Bank Indicators API (many are FAO-derived). Seed trade comes from UN Comtrade customs records for HS 1209 and HS 120991. Each row links to its original source and shows when it was fetched.
Is HS 1209 trade the same as certified seed trade?
No. HS 1209 covers seeds, fruit and spores of a kind used for sowing, such as forage, vegetable and flower seed, by customs value. It excludes cereal, oilseed and potato planting material classified elsewhere and says nothing about certification status.
Are any figures forecasts?
No. The explorer shows only historical values published by the source, flagged where the source marks an estimate. Projections such as the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook are linked, not mixed into the charts.
Why do some selections show no data?
Some countries do not report every series or year, and FAOSTAT and USDA PSD require access keys we have not configured. Instead of filling gaps we show an empty state and a link to the original source.
