How do you calculate germination rate and adjust seed rate?

Germination rate is germinated seeds ÷ seeds tested × 100. The adjusted seed rate divides the target rate by the germination percentage (and by expected field establishment) to hit the intended plant stand.

  • Formula: germination % = (germinated ÷ tested) × 100.
  • Adjusted rate = target rate ÷ (germination % × establishment %).
  • Commercial certified seed usually tests above 85–90% germination.
  • Retest seed stored more than one season or in high humidity.
