Drip, sprinkler or centre pivot — which irrigation method should the project use?
Method follows crop geometry, field shape, water quality and labour. Drip suits row and protected crops, permanent plantings and situations where water is scarce or fertigation precision matters — but it demands filtration and maintenance discipline. Sprinkler suits close-spaced field crops, germination and frost or cooling duty. Centre pivot suits large, regular, relatively flat fields with reliable pressure and power. Uniformity, not method name, determines performance, and uniformity is set by hydraulic design verified by an irrigation designer.
What actually drives the answer
Water quality often decides the method before agronomy does. High suspended solids, iron, manganese or biological load raise emitter clogging risk and change the filtration package.
Pressure and energy availability constrain the choice: a pivot with no reliable power or head is not a cheaper drip system.
Field geometry matters more than most buyers expect. Irregular, sloped or fragmented plots erode pivot economics and complicate zoning.
Whichever method is chosen, the system must be zoned so that peak demand is met within the available irrigation window using the available flow.
