Direct answer

How should a buyer specify seedlings and nursery plants?

Seedlings and nursery plants are living plants for planting, so plant-health rules apply in addition to variety identity. Grafted transplants combine a scion variety with a rootstock; both should be named in the request.

How to specify this category

What to put in your request

  • Crop, scion variety and rootstock (if grafted)
  • Plug or pot size, plant age and delivery stage
  • Quantity per delivery and planting schedule
  • Plant-health certification and phytosanitary requirements
  • Organic status of the propagation system if organic production is planned

Questions to ask suppliers

  • Which scion and rootstock are used, and are both named on the delivery note?
  • Which plant-health inspection or certification covers the nursery?
  • How are plants packed and transported, and how long can they stay in transit?
  • Is the seed treated, and is that treatment permitted in the destination country and in organic systems if relevant?
  • What phytosanitary certificate and import permit does the destination require for this crop?

Strengths and limitations buyers weigh

OptionStrengthsLimitations
Grafted transplantsA rootstock can add vigour or tolerance to specific soil-borne problems named by the supplier.Higher cost per plant; the rootstock–scion match must suit the crop and site.
Own-root transplantsLower cost and simpler logistics. No rootstock contribution to soil-borne problems or vigour.

General trade-offs; a specific variety's traits come only from its supplier documentation.

Catalog questions

Crop and variety or rootstock, plant type (plug, grafted transplant, potted plant, bare-root or containerised tree), size or age at dispatch, quantity, delivery window and destination, plus the plant-health certificate and any variety licence. Plants for planting are regulated in most countries, so import permits and phytosanitary certificates are checked before dispatch.

SeedMatch does not grow or hold plants. For commercial orchard and berry projects, a specialist approaches nurseries that can document the variety, licence, plant health and volume for your request. Licensed varieties may need an agreement with the variety owner.

Suppliers, producers and exporters are responsible for their products meeting product, labelling, certification, phytosanitary and export requirements of the origin and destination countries. A listing does not confirm compliance, availability or suitability.

Availability and the ability to trade depend on the law of each origin, destination and transit country and on the relevant permits and approvals. SeedMatch Group is not a manufacturer, importer, exporter, seller or regulatory approver; requests are reviewed by our team before any commercial introduction. Each participant is responsible for the requirements of its own role under applicable law: suppliers for their products in the origin and destination countries, buyers for their own import permissions and due diligence.
