Commercial greenhouse construction in United Arab Emirates

A UAE greenhouse budget is decided by humidity as much as by heat. Coastal humidity limits what evaporative cooling can achieve, which pushes serious year-round projects towards semi-closed or mechanically cooled envelopes far more often than in inland desert markets. Water is desalinated or treated in almost every case, so storage and treatment are base scope, not options.

Climate and build conditions

Hot arid coastal — summer peaks above 45 °C with high coastal humidity, mild winters, high solar radiation and significant dust.

Structure types built in United Arab Emirates

StructureUSD / m² installed1 hectare (2.47 acres)Notes
Shaded / net-cooled multi-span55–120USD 550K – USD 1.2MShade screens, ventilation, insect net, drip and fertigation. Cool-season production, October to April.
Fan-and-pad multi-span130–250USD 1.3M – USD 2.5MPad-and-fan cooling with shading and climate control. Effective inland; coastal humidity limits the achievable summer temperature drop.
Semi-closed / mechanically cooled350–700USD 3.5M – USD 7.0MSealed envelope, chilled-water or heat-pump cooling, dehumidification, RO water and recirculating hydroponics for twelve-month retail supply.

Site works and local cost drivers

Add 15–30% over the hardware bands for levelling, foundations in sand or sabkha, reservoirs, water treatment housing, wind and dust fencing, and the power connection. Land, packhouse and cold storage are separate.

  • Coastal humidity

Evaporative cooling loses effectiveness as humidity rises, so coastal Abu Dhabi and Dubai sites often need mechanical cooling where an inland site would not — the single largest cost fork in the country.

  • Water production

Desalinated or RO-treated supply plus reservoir storage is standard. Treatment capacity, brine handling and storage volume are a distinct capital line from irrigation.

  • Energy for cooling

Chilled water or heat pumps carry the operating cost. Tariff class, connection capacity and any solar contribution decide whether a semi-closed design is viable.

  • Dust and salt-laden air

Filtration duty, screen cleaning cycles, corrosion-resistant fixings and cladding selection all rise on coastal sites and raise maintenance cost.

  • Free-zone and import structure

Where the project sits — free zone or mainland — changes duty, ownership structure and the logistics of importing the greenhouse package.

How a construction project runs

  1. Confirm crop, target output and site — land, water, power and access.
  2. Choose the structure type and climate systems for the local climate.
  3. Set a budget range with the cost guide and calculators below.
  4. Submit a private RFQ; a sourcing specialist reviews scope before any supplier introduction.
  5. Compare reviewed proposals on a like-for-like basis, then contract and build.

Typical crops: Tomato, cucumber, pepper, strawberry, leafy greens and herbs for domestic retail and hospitality, plus propagation.

Financing: UAE projects commonly combine food-security programme support, commercial bank or Islamic finance structures and export-credit cover tied to the equipment's origin. SeedMatchGroup is not a lender, does not apply for funding and does not approve finance; a written specification with supplier-backed pricing is the input those processes need.
