Import and phytosanitary requirements
- 1. Specification and shortlist
Confirm crop, variety traits, volume and planting window. We return a private shortlist with indicative landed pricing in USD (KES settlement available through the buyer's bank).
- 2. KEPHIS import permit
Seed imports into Kenya require a KEPHIS import permit issued through the online KEPHIS system before shipment. We prepare the technical annexes — variety, origin, quantity, seed treatment and intended use — that the application needs.
- 3. Variety registration and trials
Varieties not yet on the Kenyan National Variety List require National Performance Trials (NPT) via KEPHIS before commercial release, typically two seasons. Trial/research imports move faster under a research permit. We flag registration status before you commit.
- 4. Phytosanitary and quality documents
Phytosanitary certificate from the exporting NPPO with Kenya's declared additional declarations, ISTA orange or blue certificate for germination and purity, certificate of origin, seed-treatment declaration and, where relevant, a GMO-free declaration for the National Biosafety Authority.
- 5. Shipment via JKIA or Mombasa
Air freight through JKIA for vegetable, flower and greenhouse seed (typically 5–8 days door-to-door, cold chain for sensitive lots); LCL/FCL through Mombasa for maize and forage volumes.
- 6. Clearance and inland delivery
KEPHIS inspection and customs clearance with a licensed agent, then delivery to Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru, Eldoret or Mt. Kenya — or onward transit to Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and South Sudan.
