NFT, deep water culture or substrate — which hydroponic system fits the crop?
Crop architecture and risk tolerance decide the system. NFT and deep water culture suit fast, shallow-rooted leafy crops and herbs, where short cycles limit the consequence of a nutrient or power interruption. Substrate systems — stone wool, coir or perlite — suit long-cycle fruiting crops such as tomato, cucumber and pepper, which need root-zone buffering and precise drain control. Recirculating systems require water treatment, disinfection and monitoring. Recipe, EC and pH targets are set by the appointed agronomist and system provider.
What actually drives the answer
Buffering is the practical difference: substrate gives you minutes to hours of tolerance for a fault, pure water culture gives you far less.
Recirculation lowers water and fertiliser consumption but adds disinfection, filtration and pathogen-monitoring duties — this is a treatment decision, not only a plumbing decision.
Drain percentage, drain EC monitoring and dosing accuracy determine whether a substrate system behaves as designed.
Backup power and alarm coverage should be specified with the system, not after commissioning.
