Soil moisture sensors and field telemetry for commercial farms

Soil moisture, tension and salinity sensors and the wireless networks that report them.

Requests go through SeedMatch Group. Our team reviews each request and coordinates supplier contact; buyers and suppliers are not put in direct contact. The buyer service is free, and projects are qualified from USD 250,000.

Direct answer

How should a buyer specify precision soil sensors and telemetry?

Soil sensors measure water content, soil water tension or salinity at a point, and telemetry carries the readings to an irrigation controller or data platform. Readings are only useful when the sensor type suits the soil and crop and is installed and calibrated for that soil.

How to specify this category

What to put in your request

  • Fields, crops and soil types, with area and number of monitoring sites
  • What to measure — water content, soil water tension or salinity (EC) — and at which depths
  • Telemetry: distance to the gateway, power source and reporting interval
  • The irrigation controller or data platform the readings must reach
  • Installation, soil calibration, training and maintenance scope

Questions to ask suppliers

  • Which calibration applies to this soil, and how will it be checked against soil samples?
  • Which radio band and type approvals apply in the destination country?
  • How many gateways are needed to cover the site, and who maintains them?
  • Which platform or controller stores the data, and can it be exported?

Strengths and limitations buyers weigh

OptionStrengthsLimitations
Water-content probes (capacitance/FDR, TDR)Log volumetric water content continuously, at several depths if needed.Point readings that need soil-specific calibration, especially in clay or saline soils.
TensiometersRead soil water tension directly; mechanical versions need no power or soil calibration.Need refilling and servicing, and have a limited range in dry soil.

General trade-offs; a specific variety's traits come only from its supplier documentation.

Catalog questions

It depends on soil, crop and how the readings will be used. Capacitance (FDR) probes and TDR systems measure volumetric water content, tensiometers measure soil water tension and EC sensors indicate salinity. Each needs correct installation and calibration for the soil; the product types table compares uses and limitations.

Number of sensors and sites, field size and distance to the gateway, power source, the data platform or irrigation controller to connect to, reporting interval and who will maintain the network.

Availability and the ability to trade depend on the law of each origin, destination and transit country and on the relevant permits and approvals.
