Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) soil moisture systems
What is a time-domain reflectometry (tdr) soil moisture systems?
TDR systems send an electromagnetic pulse along buried rods and time its reflection to estimate soil water, and some also derive bulk EC. They are used where waveform-level measurement matters, such as research and high-value irrigation, but still need soil-specific validation.
Premium collection: Research-grade soil-water and EC measurement for irrigation scheduling. Criteria met: Documented test basis, Measured resource efficiency.

Advantages
- Waveform-based measurement
- Can also estimate bulk EC
- Long research track record
Limitations and risks
- More complex and costly system
- Factory calibrations can overestimate moisture, especially in clay
- Not every 'reflectometry' sensor is true TDR
Maintenance
- Validate against soil samples
- Inspect rods and cables
- Maintain logger power
Sustainability and compliance
Supports precise scheduling where data is acted on.
Ask whether the device is true TDR and what calibration evidence exists for your soil.
Questions to ask in your RFQ
- Is it true TDR or another reflectometry method?
- What soil calibration is supplied?
- What logger and power does it need?
