Greenhouse manufacturer vs EPC contractor vs independent procurement platform
A greenhouse manufacturer supplies and stands behind its own structure and technology ecosystem. An EPC contractor takes engineering, procurement and construction responsibility across multiple suppliers and usually the civil and installation interfaces too. An independent procurement platform sits earlier: it helps the buyer define crop, climate and commercial requirements, issue one comparable RFQ and evaluate proposals — it does not manufacture, engineer or build, and it does not replace the manufacturer or the EPC.
These three roles are frequently confused, and the confusion is expensive. Buyers sometimes expect single-point delivery responsibility from a component manufacturer, or expect neutral comparison from a party that will also be quoting the work.
The roles are complementary. The question is not which one is better, but which one you need at the stage you are at.
Where each role carries risk
- Manufacturer: product performance, manufacturing quality, delivery of its own supply, warranty on its equipment
- EPC contractor: interface risk between packages, site programme, installation, commissioning and often civil works
- Procurement platform: none of the delivery risk — its contribution is definition, comparability and process before award
What each role cannot neutrally do
- A manufacturer cannot neutrally advise whether a competing structure or climate philosophy suits your crop better
- An EPC that also supplies its own preferred stack has a commercial interest in that stack
- A procurement platform cannot take engineering responsibility, certify a design, or guarantee agronomic outcomes
A workable sequence
Define the project independently, issue one RFQ, then decide whether the award goes to a manufacturer-led package with your own installation, a full EPC scope, or a multi-supplier structure you coordinate. The delivery model is an outcome of the comparison, not an assumption you make before it.
