Greenhouse systems
Greenhouse systems are the structure, cover, climate control and growing equipment of a commercial greenhouse. This page is for growers, investors and project teams planning a commercial greenhouse: it explains the main system types, what changes a quote and what a comparable request needs, then opens a request that our sourcing team reviews before any supplier is contacted.
Requests go through SeedMatch Group. Our team reviews each request and coordinates supplier contact; buyers and suppliers are not put in direct contact. The buyer service is free, and projects are qualified from USD 250,000.

How should a buyer specify greenhouse systems?
A commercial greenhouse is engineered to its site: local wind, snow, radiation and temperature extremes decide the structure, cover and climate equipment, and the crop decides gutter height, growing system and irrigation. Quotes are only comparable when every supplier answers the same design brief — structure, climate, crop, irrigation and fertigation, site works and project scale.

| Type | Maturity | Best for | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venlo-type glass greenhouse | Mature | Tomato, cucumber, pepper, flowers and propagation in high-value markets. | Higher structural and foundation cost than film houses |
| Multi-span polyethylene greenhouse | Mature | Vegetables, berries, flowers and nursery production. | Film ages under UV and needs periodic replacement |
| Tunnel and high-tunnel structures | Mature | Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries and season-extension vegetables. | Limited temperature control |
| Semi-closed greenhouse with active climate control | Established | Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and berries in hot, dry or pest-pressured regions. | Higher capital and energy-system complexity |
- Mature
Venlo-type glass greenhouse
Column spans (examples): 8, 9.6 or 12.8 m
- Mature
Multi-span polyethylene greenhouse
Span widths (examples): 6.4–16 m
- Mature
Tunnel and high-tunnel structures
Tunnel widths (examples): about 6.2, 8.5 and 9.6 m
- Established
Semi-closed greenhouse with active climate control
Reference project size (example): about 7,000 m² in an arid climate

How to specify this category
What to put in your request
- Site location and climate data, plot size, orientation and ground conditions
- Crop, growing system (soil, substrate, hydroponic) and required gutter height
- Structure type, cover material and the design loads to be met (wind, snow, crop; EN 13031-1 in Europe)
- Natural ventilation area (side and roof vents, with any insect netting) or mechanical cooling capacity
- Heating, screens and lighting scope where the climate or crop needs them
- Irrigation and fertigation scope, water analysis and drainage handling
- Project scale and phasing: first block area and planned expansion
- Site works, power and water connections, delivery terms, installation and commissioning
Questions to ask suppliers
- Which design standard, class, design working life and wind, snow and crop loads does the structure meet for this site?
- What vent area, as a share of floor area, does the design give — with insect netting fitted?
- Which climate, irrigation and fertigation components are included, and which are excluded?
- What is included in installation, commissioning and training?
- Which components are covered by warranty, and for how long?
- What local permits are needed before construction?
Strengths and limitations buyers weigh
| Option | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Tunnel or multi-span film house | Lower capital cost and quick erection; film tolerates some frame movement. | Film must be replaced periodically; needs enough vent area designed in, and passive houses are limited by climate. |
| Glass (Venlo-type) greenhouse | Long-lived rigid cover suited to heated, fully equipped production. | Higher structural and capital cost; glass tolerates less frame displacement, so the structural design is stricter. |
| Net or shade house | Low cost, high ventilation and insect exclusion in hot climates. | No heating or active cooling, so production depends on the outside climate. |
| Semi-closed or high-tech greenhouse | Tight climate control for regular, year-round production. | Energy becomes a major running cost and the team needs climate-control skills. |
General trade-offs; a specific product's performance comes only from its supplier documentation and the project's design.
What materially changes the quote
| Factor | Why it moves the price or scope |
|---|---|
| Covered area and phasing | Mobilisation, shipping and commissioning are largely fixed, so the cost per m² usually falls as the first block grows; phasing changes what is quoted now. |
| Site climate and design loads | Wind, snow and crop loads (EN 13031-1 in Europe) set steel weight, spacing and foundations. |
| Structure and cover type | Tunnel or film house, glass and semi-closed houses differ in structure, cover life and the equipment they carry. |
| Climate equipment | Heating, cooling, screens and lighting add capital cost, and energy becomes a running cost once climate is controlled. |
| Crop and growing system | Gutter height, substrate or hydroponic systems, trellising and crop handling change both structure and fit-out. |
| Water and irrigation scope | The water analysis decides filtration or treatment; fertigation, storage and drain recirculation add packages. |
| Site works and utilities | Earthworks, drainage, foundations, power and water connections are often excluded from structure quotes and must be priced separately. |
| Destination, delivery terms and timing | Incoterm, import duties and taxes, lead time and the installation season change the delivered total and programme. |
| Documents required | Structural calculations, standards compliance statements, warranties and as-built drawings must be requested up front to be included. |
Unknowns and assumptions: Until the site's climate data, water analysis and ground conditions are known, every figure in a quote rests on the supplier's own assumptions. State what is still unknown in the request instead of guessing, and ask each supplier to list the assumptions behind its price.
