What does premium mean in this catalog?
Premium here means a product type meets at least two of five written criteria: closed-loop control, a documented test basis, export-grade quality protection, measured resource efficiency or labour substitution. It does not mean expensive or best. Each card shows which criteria it meets, its main limitation and the evidence to request before you compare offers.
The five premium criteria
A product type enters this collection only when it meets at least two criteria. The criteria are checkable in an offer — ask suppliers for the evidence behind each one.
- Closed-loop control: Measures a crop, climate, water or produce variable and acts on it automatically, with logged data the buyer can audit.
- Documented test basis: Performance can be specified against a published standard, test method or independent study — not only a brochure claim.
- Export-grade quality: Directly protects or measures quality attributes that export and premium retail buyers specify (defects, size, colour, dry matter, shelf life).
- Measured resource efficiency: Reduces water, nutrient, energy or chemical use per unit of output in a way the operator can measure on site.
- Labour substitution: Automates a labour-critical task where availability or cost limits the project.
What premium does not mean
- It is not a price band, a brand tier or a ranking of suppliers.
- It is no guarantee of yield, savings or payback; those depend on the site, the crop, the team and the market.
- Higher automation increases dependence on power, spare parts, software and trained staff — budget for them.
- Premium varieties enter only with documented trial data. None of the catalogued varieties currently has verified trial evidence, so none is listed here.

Standards and rules to name in the request
- Greenhouse structures
- Ask for the structural design standard and the wind and snow loads used for your site; national and European standards differ.
- Lighting
- Horticultural LED efficacy and claims can be specified against DLC technical requirements; electrical safety marks are separate. Source
- Robotics and drones
- Autonomous machines and spray drones need local safety and aviation approvals; pesticide application rules apply as for any sprayer.
- Post-harvest quality
- Export grades, maturity and storage atmospheres are buyer- and destination-specific; state them in the RFQ. Source
General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change; confirm the version in force with your certifier or authority before contracting.
Buyer questions
It meets at least two of five written criteria: closed-loop control, documented test basis, export-grade quality protection, measured resource efficiency or labour substitution. Price and brand play no part.
No. Results depend on the site, crop, team, energy prices and market. Ask suppliers for reference data under conditions like yours and model the project with your own figures.
They are early commercial with limited deployments. Treat them as a pilot line with clear performance targets and a manual fallback.
We list a variety as premium only with documented trial evidence. The catalogued varieties are currently unverified, so we ask breeders for trial data during sourcing instead.
Yes, where the destination rules allow. Sensors, covers and grading lines carry no organic status; EU organic crops must still grow in living soil.
