How should a buyer specify leafy greens?
Lettuce and leafy greens are short-shelf-life products specified by type, head weight or bunch size, and cooling after harvest.

How to specify this category
What to put in your request
- Product, variety and quality class or buyer specification
- Size, count or weight range and maturity indicators
- Packing format and labelling
- Volume, shipment frequency and delivery window
- Destination, Incoterm and certifications required
Questions to ask suppliers
- Which quality class or grade standard applies — UNECE, Codex, EU marketing standard or the importer's own specification?
- What size, count, colour or maturity indicators define the lot, and how are they measured at packing?
- What is the documented harvest window for the named origin, and when can the first shipment be confirmed?
- If organic is required, which certification body certifies the grower and is it recognised for the destination market?
- What pre-cooling, temperature and transit-time limits does the packer apply, and who records them?
- Which residue limits apply in the destination, and is a recent laboratory report available for the lot?
Commercial forms
- Fresh whole produce in retail pre-packs or bulk cartons
- Bulk or processing-grade lots where the buyer's use allows
- Organic lots only when the grower is certified for the destination market
Grades and quality
- Quality classes such as Extra, Class I and Class II are defined in UNECE and Codex standards; many importers add their own specification on top.
- The EU applies a specific marketing standard to lettuces and endives; check whether it applies to your destination.
- “Premium” has no single legal meaning: it should be written as measurable criteria — class, size, colour, sugar or dry matter, defects and packing.
Packing and handling
- Pre-cooling, storage temperature and transit time are set per product and recorded by the packer.
- Cold-chain records and packing dates should travel with the shipment documents.
Seasonality
Harvest windows depend on origin, variety and year. SeedMatch does not publish seasons for this category; each supplier must state its documented harvest window in the offer.
What “organic” means commercially
- Organic is a regulated claim. Produce or seed is organic only when the grower or operator is certified by a control body recognised in the market where it is sold, such as under Regulation (EU) 2018/848 or the USDA National Organic Program.
- Certification is market-specific: a certificate valid in one market does not automatically allow organic sale in another.
- Words such as natural, sustainable, regenerative, eco, pesticide-free or untreated are not organic certification and are never shown as organic on SeedMatch.
What “premium” means commercially
- Premium has no single legal definition. SeedMatch shows a premium label only when the supplier documents the criteria behind it, such as quality class, size, sugar content or packing.
- Buyers should write premium as measurable requirements in the request so offers can be compared.

Leafy greens are highly perishable, so most trade is regional with short transit. A request should give the product (head lettuce, romaine, baby leaf or spinach), pack format, weekly volume, required shelf life on arrival and the temperature chain.
Use the request on this page: origins, variety, quality class or grade, size, pack format, weekly volume, arrival window, destination port and documents. Managed programmes start at USD 250,000 and the service is free for buyers. Supplier communications are handled by Global B2B Group, SeedMatch Group's parent group, so buyers and suppliers do not contact each other directly.
Suppliers, producers and exporters are responsible for their products meeting product, labelling, certification, phytosanitary and export requirements of the origin and destination countries. A listing does not confirm compliance, availability or suitability.
Availability and the ability to trade depend on the law of each origin, destination and transit country and on the relevant permits and approvals. SeedMatch Group is not a manufacturer, importer, exporter, seller or regulatory approver; requests are reviewed by our team before any commercial introduction. Each participant is responsible for the requirements of its own role under applicable law: suppliers for their products in the origin and destination countries, buyers for their own import permissions and due diligence. We do not guarantee any supplier's compliance. Participant responsibilities · Regulation & restricted items
