Fresh produce buying guide: official price ranges, season windows and buyer questions

Figures checked 20 Oct 2026

Pallets of crated leafy greens loaded into a refrigerated truck at a packhouse dock

Short answer

Use official market reports as a starting reference, not as an offer. In the EU, the European Commission publishes weekly packing-station prices by member state; in the United States, USDA publishes daily wholesale prices per package at terminal markets. Season windows set when each origin can supply. Delivered cost adds packing, freight, cold chain, duties and the Incoterm you agree. When the program is specified, a sourcing specialist compares real offers against the same specification.

How to read these prices

Ex-packaging station price (EU)
Price at the packing station in the producing country, before transport to the buyer. Reported weekly by member states to the European Commission, in EUR per 100 kg; shown here in EUR per kg.
Terminal market price (US)
Price of wholesale lots sold by primary receivers at a city wholesale market, quoted per package (carton, flat or bushel), already including freight to that city.
Delivered cost
What the buyer actually pays at destination: product price plus packing, freight, insurance, cold chain, duties and fees, depending on the Incoterm.

Gulf markets

We have not found an official Gulf wholesale price series that we can read and cite with its date and unit, so this guide shows no Gulf prices. Gulf buyers can use the European and US references above as a starting point and compare supplier offers delivered to their port.

Season windows

When each origin can supply drives price and continuity. Plan programs that switch origin as seasons end.

Months in which each member state reported packing-station prices in the 12 months shown. Reporting usually follows the marketing season, but a gap can also mean no report was filed.

Southern hemisphere and Mexico: official season windows

What moves the price

  • Season and origin: prices are usually highest at the start and end of an origin's season.
  • Variety and type: cherry and vine tomatoes trade well above round tomatoes; coloured peppers above green.
  • Size, count and grade: Class I, size bands and counts per carton change the price per kg.
  • Packaging and labelling: retail packs, private label and punnets cost more than bulk cartons.
  • Certifications and residue limits required by your market.
  • Incoterm, freight mode (sea reefer or air) and cold-chain requirements.
  • Program length and volume commitment: regular weekly programs are priced differently from spot loads.

What to include in your request

  • Product, variety and type (for example vine tomatoes, Hass avocados)
  • Grade, size or count, and quality limits
  • Volume per shipment and per season or year
  • Delivery window and preferred origins
  • Packaging, labelling and pallet format
  • Required documents: phytosanitary certificate, certifications, residue tests
  • Destination port or city and Incoterm
  • Total program value (qualified programs from USD 250,000)

Buyer questions

Are these the prices I will pay?

No. They are official reference prices at the packing station (EU) or at a US wholesale market. Your delivered cost depends on specification, packaging, freight, duties and the Incoterm, and is only known from real offers.

Why are the European ranges so wide?

Each range combines several member states, sizes and grades, and each country reports in its own way. A narrow specification gives a narrow price.

Why is there no Gulf price?

We only show figures from official sources with a date and unit. We have not found one for Gulf wholesale markets yet, so we show none rather than estimate.

How current are the figures?

Each table shows its period or report date. European figures were downloaded on 20 October 2026 and US figures come from the report of 19 October 2026. Follow the source links for the latest data.

Does SeedMatch publish its own prices or stock?

No. SeedMatch does not publish live stock or prices. A sourcing specialist reviews each request, and suppliers do not receive your contact details.

Is there a cost for buyers, and is there a minimum?

Sending a request is free for buyers. Qualified programs start at USD 250,000 total annual or seasonal value.

Ready to specify your program?

Send a private, specification-led request. Free for buyers; programs from USD 250,000. A sourcing specialist reviews every request before any supplier is approached.
