Greenhouse project feasibility in the Netherlands

For investors and growers planning high-tech greenhouse, seed or infrastructure projects in the world's most intensive greenhouse market.

The four feasibility factors

Land

Greenhouse land is concentrated in clusters such as Westland, Oostland and Brabant/Limburg, and serviced horticultural land is scarce and expensive. Zoning is municipal; existing greenhouse sites or redevelopment plots are usually more practical than greenfield agricultural land.

Water

Water availability is generally good, but discharge of drain water is tightly regulated and recirculation with treatment is the norm for new builds. Confirm discharge and emission obligations with the provincial authority and water board.

Energy

Heating dominates the energy budget; combined heat and power and geothermal sources are established in the sector. Grid congestion in parts of the country is publicly documented, so confirm connection capacity with the grid operator early.

Climate

Temperate maritime climate with low winter light: heating and supplemental lighting drive design, while summer cooling loads are moderate.

Local regulations

Fertilizing products follow EU Regulation 2019/1009; plant health and plant reproductive material are overseen by the NVWA. Construction, emissions and water permits are national and provincial.

Competent authority: NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) and EU Fertilising Products Regulation (EU) 2019/1009
