Commercial onion seed procurement
For commercial onion plantings, SeedMatchGroup turns your planting plan into a lot specification (day-length type, variety or traits, quantity, test data, documents and delivery window) and collects reviewed offers from qualified suppliers. We do not hold seed inventory or promise particular varieties; offers state what each supplier can document for your destination.
What to specify
- Day-length type (short, intermediate or long day) matched to your latitude and sowing date; ask your agronomist or extension service to confirm.
- Hybrid or open-pollinated, bulb colour, storage and market traits, and any disease tolerances you need.
- Planted area and target plant population, so the seed quantity is calculated rather than guessed.
- Minimum germination and purity, test date, and seed treatment (or untreated) as required by your import permit.
Calculating the lot size
Seed quantity = planted area × target plants per area ÷ (seeds per kg × germination × expected field emergence). Use your own population and emergence assumptions, and the seeds-per-kg and germination figures the supplier reports for the actual lot. The seed rate calculator applies the same formula.
Documents offers should include
- Germination and purity test report for the specific lot, with laboratory and test date.
- Phytosanitary certificate issued by the exporting country's plant protection organization, with any additional declarations your permit requires.
- Variety name, lot number, packing size and treatment declaration.
- Shipping terms, transit time and storage conditions in line with your sowing window.

SeedMatchGroup reviews project requests from USD 250,000 in total value. Buyers use the service free of charge; qualified suppliers pay. Supplier identities stay confidential until a reviewed introduction.
