Gutter-Connect Greenhouse vs Multi-Tunnel Structures
Gutter-connect houses give higher gutters, better climate control and full automation readiness. Multi-tunnels are cheaper, faster to erect and easier to phase, at the cost of climate precision.
Can multi-tunnels be upgraded to gutter-connect performance?
Not meaningfully. Gutter height and structural loading are fixed at erection, so screens, heating and internal transport cannot be added to the same standard later. Choose the target crop and climate spec before ordering steel.
| Dimension | Gutter-connect (Venlo / wide-span) | Multi-tunnel / multi-span arch |
|---|---|---|
| CAPEX per hectare (structure) | USD 350K–900K turnkey depending on climate spec | USD 120K–350K turnkey |
| Gutter height | 4.5–7 m — high wire crops, better buffering | 3–4.5 m typical |
| Climate control precision | High — screens, heating, semi-closed options | Moderate — natural ventilation dominant |
| Automation readiness | Internal transport, hanging gutters, robotics-ready | Limited; retrofits are harder |
| Build time (1 ha) | 5–9 months including climate systems | 2–4 months |
| Wind / snow rating | Engineered to local code with certification | Site-dependent; verify design loads carefully |
| Phasing | Bays extendable but head-station sized upfront | Very easy to add spans in phases |
| Best-fit output | Year-round high-yield fruiting crops for retail contracts | Seasonal or protected-season production, softer specs |
Cost delta at a glance
- •Gutter-connect typically costs USD 200K–550K/ha more than an equivalent multi-tunnel footprint.
- •Yield uplift from the higher gutter and better climate control is often 25–60% for tomato and pepper, which is where the payback comes from.
- •Multi-tunnel wins when the offtake price does not reward year-round supply or when phase-one capital is capped.
Planning-grade ranges for budgeting only. Actual pricing depends on site, specification, climate and supplier scope.
Choose Gutter-connect (Venlo / wide-span) when
- Year-round supply contracts with retailers or exporters
- High-wire fruiting crops and any project planning internal automation
- Climates needing heating, screening or semi-closed operation
Choose Multi-tunnel / multi-span arch when
- Protected-season production and lower-value crops
- Fast-track projects and phased hectare-by-hectare rollouts
- Markets where financing limits phase-one CAPEX
