Fertilizers & plant nutrition

Fertilizers & Plant Nutrition Solutions for Commercial Agriculture

Plant nutrition is the largest recurring cost line in most commercial agricultural operations and the one with the widest performance spread between a well-specified programme and a purchased product list. SeedMatchGroup does not sell fertilizer. We structure the requirement, run a confidential competitive process with qualified manufacturers and engineering companies worldwide, and return a technically evaluated comparison.

Solution categories

Each category explains how a commercial buyer specifies it, what a complete RFQ must contain, and which standards and registrations apply.

What this pillar covers

Commercial crop nutrition

Programmes built from soil, water and tissue analysis against a defined yield and quality target, rather than from a distributor's available stock list.

Greenhouse nutrition

Recipe-driven fertigation in substrate and hydroponic systems, where the nutrient solution is the root zone and daily drain analysis drives the correction.

Open-field agriculture

Base dressing, top dressing and injection strategies calibrated to soil buffering, rainfall and machinery windows across large hectarages.

Sustainable fertilization

Reducing applied nutrient per tonne produced through timing, placement, coating technology and biological efficiency layers.

Precision nutrition

Management-zone delineation, variable-rate execution and a measured feedback loop that proves nutrient-use efficiency actually improved.

Fertigation

The full train — source water, filtration, dosing, control, sensing and flushing — specified as one scope so the bottleneck is not discovered after commissioning.

Nutrient efficiency

Yield per unit of applied nutrient as the governing metric, which usually reduces tonnage while protecting output.

Water efficiency

Recirculation, drain management and irrigation scheduling that cut both water withdrawal and nutrient discharge.

Yield and operating cost

Cost per nutrient unit delivered at the field gate, freight and handling losses included, evaluated against the yield response it supports.

Environmental sustainability

Nitrate, phosphate and heavy-metal compliance in the destination market, with documentation that survives a retailer audit.

How the buying decision is made

  1. 1. Establish the agronomic baseline

Soil analysis, irrigation water analysis and, where available, tissue and yield history. Without these three documents, every supplier quotes a generic programme and no two offers are comparable.

  2. 2. Define the target, not the product

State yield, quality trait, certification and the environmental constraints. The specification should describe the outcome and the operating envelope, leaving the product route open to competing suppliers.

  3. 3. Choose the delivery route

Granular base dressing, liquid injection, fertigation or foliar — each carries different infrastructure, labour and precision consequences that must be costed together with the product.

  4. 4. Verify infrastructure capability

Dosing accuracy, filtration, storage, agitation and control systems are checked against the intended programme before products are selected. Most programme failures are hydraulic, not chemical.

  5. 5. Set quality and compliance criteria

Contaminant limits, certifier approvals, registration in the destination country and lot-level certificates of analysis become contractual, not aspirational.

  6. 6. Run a confidential competitive process

The requirement is dispatched privately to qualified manufacturers. Suppliers are not disclosed to each other, and buyers compare on specification, delivered cost per nutrient unit, lead time and service.

  7. 7. Evaluate, contract and measure

Offers are normalised technically and commercially. Post-award, the programme is measured against the baseline so the next cycle is negotiated on evidence.

Project examples

Representative, anonymised illustrations of how a requirement in this pillar is specified and procured. Buyer identities are never disclosed.

Greenhouse tomato (high-wire, substrate)

Country
Morocco — Souss-Massa
Project size
12 ha glass and high-tech poly, 4 fertigation heads
Recommended solution
Single-salt water soluble programme with EDDHA-chelated iron selected against a high-bicarbonate borehole analysis, acid injection for pH correction, stage-specific recipes and drain-based correction, plus a calcium-nitrate call-off schedule aligned to the harvest curve.
Expected benefits
Emitter blockage and line-flushing labour reduced after the insolubles specification became contractual; nutrient cost benchmarked per kilogram of fruit rather than per tonne of product, with lot-level certificates of analysis retained for retailer audit.

Irrigated maize and soybean rotation

Country
Zambia — Central Province
Project size
2,400 ha under pivot, ~6,500 t nutrient programme per year
Recommended solution
Bulk NPK base dressing tendered on delivered cost per unit of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O with crush-strength and dust limits written into the specification, combined with UAN injection through the pivots for in-season nitrogen and a zoned soil-sampling grid driving variable-rate prescriptions.
Expected benefits
Handling and storage losses controlled through granule-integrity clauses; split nitrogen application moved a share of the programme from pre-plant to in-season, and the tender was structured with a seasonal trade-finance facility instead of cash payment at import.

Legal notice · No warranty · Manufacturer–buyer contract

The contract is between the manufacturer and the buyer. SeedMatchGroup is not a party to it.

SeedMatchGroup is an independent, supplier-neutral sourcing and introduction service. We do not manufacture, formulate, blend, register, certify, store, transport, apply, import, export or sell any fertilizer, crop-protection product, biological, seed, equipment or other input. Every supply agreement, price, warranty, specification, certificate of analysis, registration, label and delivery obligation is concluded and performed directly between the manufacturer or supplier and the buyer.

  • Product & quality — composition, purity, contaminant levels, efficacy, shelf life and conformity with the certificate of analysis are the manufacturer's sole responsibility.
  • Registration & compliance — product registration, labelling, classification, permits and lawful import or use in the country of destination rest with the manufacturer and the buyer, each in their own role.
  • Delivery & logistics — incoterms, packaging, transport classification, insurance, customs clearance, demurrage and delays are governed exclusively by the supply contract.
  • Use & agronomic outcome — application decisions, dose, timing, operator safety, residues, yield and any environmental effect remain the buyer's responsibility.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, SeedMatchGroup, its affiliates, officers, agents and contractors give no warranty of any kind (express, implied or statutory) and accept no liability for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive or commercial loss — including product defects, non-conforming consignments, rejected imports, residue exceedances, regulatory penalties, crop damage, delays or supplier insolvency — arising from any product, quotation, introduction or supplier relationship initiated through the platform. How this guidance is produced

Supplier-neutral

We do not manufacture equipment and do not represent a fixed vendor list. Guidance reflects the project, not a catalogue.

Human-led review

Content is prepared and reviewed by sourcing specialists working on live commercial agriculture projects, supported by proprietary technology.

International scope

Practice drawn from greenhouse, CEA, irrigation, nursery, packing-house and processing projects across multiple climates and regulatory environments.

Confidential by default

Project details stay private. Nothing is published, listed or shared with suppliers without your approval.
