Cool-season vegetable export usually points to poly-tunnel or Venlo glass; leafy greens for retail contracts point to hydroponic NFT or vertical farming; long-cycle tomato / pepper points to high-tech Venlo. What type of greenhouse is suitable for my project?
Structure selection follows climate severity, crop value and production window. Tunnels and multi-span plastic houses suit mild climates and lower-value crops; reinforced multi-span structures with active cooling suit hot climates; high-tech glass with screens, heating and climate computer suits cold or high-radiation climates and high-value crops grown year-round. Wind and snow loads set the minimum structural class regardless of crop.
What crops justify a commercial greenhouse investment?
Most commercial protected agriculture projects grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, leafy greens, herbs, berries, cut flowers or seedlings. The decision depends on local market price, year-round demand, cold-chain access and export options rather than agronomy alone — the same structure can be economic for one crop and marginal for another in the same country.
What level of automation does a commercial project need?
Below roughly one hectare, semi-automatic irrigation with basic climate control is common. Above that, a climate computer with integrated fertigation is usually justified by labour cost, yield stability and the traceability that buyers and lenders expect. Hydroponic production effectively requires automated dosing regardless of area.
