Greenhouse climate control combines heating, cooling (natural or forced ventilation, evaporative pad-and-fan, fogging), and screening to hold temperature, humidity and light within crop-specific ranges. System choice depends on outdoor climate severity, crop tolerance and energy cost, and is usually the largest driver of both CAPEX and OPEX after the structure itself.

Ventilation — the first line of climate control
Natural (roof/side vent) ventilation is the lowest-cost climate control method and sufficient in temperate climates; forced (fan) ventilation adds capacity for hotter or more humid climates but increases both CAPEX and energy draw.
Cooling technologies
- •Evaporative pad-and-fan cooling — effective in hot, dry (low-humidity) climates; less effective where humidity is already high.
- •Fogging/misting systems — fine droplet cooling suited to a wider humidity range, with higher water quality requirements to avoid nozzle blockage.
- •Shade and thermal screens — reduce heat load and, at night, reduce heat loss; a lower-cost complement to active cooling.
Heating technologies
- •Fossil-fuel boilers (gas, diesel, biomass) — proven, widely available, subject to fuel price volatility.
- •Heat pumps — higher upfront cost, lower running cost where electricity is affordable and climate load is moderate.
- •Waste heat or geothermal integration — site-specific, can materially reduce OPEX where available.
