What greenhouse farming equipment is needed for a commercial crop?
Propagation and substrate handling, the growing system for the crop, irrigation with fertigation, climate equipment sized to the site, monitoring and alarms, and post-harvest handling with cold storage. The mix changes with crop: vine crops need high-wire and gutters, leafy greens need NFT or ebb-and-flow benches.
Should equipment be bought as one package or separately?
One coordinated package is easier to commission and gives one point of accountability. Splitting is only worth it when a specialist sub-system — fertigation, cold chain or automation — is materially better sourced independently, and someone owns the interfaces between packages.
Frequently asked questions
In most commercial settings the largest gains come from climate uniformity (ventilation, screens, cooling capacity), then irrigation and fertigation accuracy, then the growing system. Monitoring adds value only once the equipment it controls can actually respond.
Yes, and it is common. The usual sequence is structure and climate first, then fertigation and growing system, then post-harvest. Phasing works best when phase 1 already includes the pipework, power and control capacity that later phases will need.
