How do you plan seed rate and oil output for oil crops?

For sunflower, canola, soybean, sesame, groundnut and other oil crops, seed rate is derived from target plant density, germination, field loss and thousand seed weight; oil output is expected yield multiplied by the crop's oil content.

  • Seed rate (kg/ha) = seeds/ha × TSW ÷ 1,000,000, adjusted for germination and field loss.
  • Oil output (t/ha) = yield (t/ha) × oil content (%), typically 18–50% by crop.
  • Sunflower is normally drilled at 55,000–70,000 plants/ha on 70 cm rows.
  • Gross revenue = yield × area × market price per tonne, before crushing margin.
