Canola & Rapeseed Seed Rate & Yield Calculator
Plan winter or spring canola/rapeseed programmes with confidence. Enter your target plant density, TSW, germination and field loss to get seed rate in kg/ha, total seed quantity, estimated cost, projected yield and oil output for feed- and food-grade markets.
Hybrid canola is typically established at 40–60 plants/m² for winter and 60–80 plants/m² for spring — well-structured seedbeds and a low field-loss factor tighten your true rate.
How much canola / rapeseed seed do you need per hectare?
Canola / rapeseed seed rate is calculated as target plants per hectare divided by germination and field-establishment factors, multiplied by thousand seed weight. With 50 plants/m², 95% germination, 15% field loss and a TSW of 4.5 g, the calculator returns kg/ha, total seed volume, projected yield, gross revenue and crushable oil output.
- Formula: seed rate (kg/ha) = seeds/ha × TSW (4.5 g) ÷ 1,000,000.
- Typical density used here: 50 plants/m² on 30 cm rows.
- Reference yield 3.5 t/ha at about US$540/t.
- Oil content assumption 42% — oil output = yield × oil content.
