Sesame Seed Rate & Yield Calculator
Sesame is a small-seeded, high-oil crop with very low seed rates per hectare. Use this free calculator to plan white, black and mixed sesame programmes — estimate seed quantity, seed cost, projected yield, revenue and oil output for export and crushing markets.
Commercial sesame is typically sown at 3–5 kg/ha with 30–45 cm row spacing. Aim for 20–30 plants/m² after thinning. Oil content typically ranges 45–55%.
How much sesame seed do you need per hectare?
Sesame seed rate is calculated as target plants per hectare divided by germination and field-establishment factors, multiplied by thousand seed weight. With 25 plants/m², 90% germination, 20% field loss and a TSW of 3 g, the calculator returns kg/ha, total seed volume, projected yield, gross revenue and crushable oil output.
- Formula: seed rate (kg/ha) = seeds/ha × TSW (3 g) ÷ 1,000,000.
- Typical density used here: 25 plants/m² on 45 cm rows.
- Reference yield 0.9 t/ha at about US$1600/t.
- Oil content assumption 50% — oil output = yield × oil content.

sesame seed rate — frequently asked questions
At 25 plants/m², 90% germination, 20% field loss and a thousand seed weight of 3 g, the calculator derives the exact kg/ha. Adjust each input to your supplier's technical sheet — TSW alone can move the seed rate by 20–30%.
The default case uses 0.9 t/ha and 50% oil content, giving roughly 0.45 t of oil per hectare. Replace both with your agronomist's local trial data before committing to a procurement volume.
