What makes a fertilizer 'water-soluble' or 'specialty' grade

Fully water-soluble fertilizers are manufactured to dissolve completely and rapidly with minimal insoluble residue, which matters because residue clogs drip emitters and filters. Specialty grades also include chelated micronutrients (EDTA, DTPA, EDDHA forms) that remain plant-available across a wider pH range than non-chelated forms.

Why grade choice affects total cost

Specialty grades cost more per tonne than commodity fertilizer but reduce filter cleaning frequency, emitter replacement and crop stress from inconsistent nutrient delivery — the total cost comparison should include system maintenance and yield impact, not raw fertilizer price alone.

Building a fertigation recipe

  • Start from a water analysis, not a generic recipe — background nutrients and antagonistic ions change the required blend.
  • Adjust N-P-K-Ca-Mg-S ratios by crop and growth stage.
