Emergency seed sourcing: how to recover a missed planting window
When your supplier defaults and the planting window is closing — the parallel-sourcing playbook that actually recovers the season.
Every season a percentage of growers face the same emergency: confirmed seed didn't ship, the original supplier won't respond, and the planting window is two weeks away. Here is the playbook we run.
Step 1 — Map every breeder who could supply within the window
Not 'the cheapest' — every breeder who could physically ship the quantity in the time available.
Step 2 — Open parallel requests, not sequential ones
Sequential is how you miss the window. Parallel is how you save it.
Step 3 — Pre-pay phytosanitary expediting
Standard phyto issuance is 5–10 days. Expedited can be 24–48 hours where the regulator allows.
Step 4 — Default to air freight
The freight premium is rarely the deciding factor when the alternative is losing the season.
Step 5 — Accept a substitute variety that performs
Variety A may be unavailable; variety B from another breeder may carry similar performance characteristics and be in stock.
