Seed supplier checklist: 12 questions to ask before signing
A reusable supplier-vetting checklist covering documentation, breeding, references, logistics, IP and dispute resolution.
Print this checklist and run every prospective supplier through it. If they cannot answer half of these confidently, walk away.
1. Years in business and registered legal entity
2. Breeder or distributor? Where does the genetics come from?
3. ISTA-accredited lab and current sample results
4. Year of production for each lot offered
5. Documented disease and resistance package
6. References from buyers in a comparable climate
7. Phytosanitary documentation issued in-country
8. Trial protocol and trial pack pricing
9. Lead time from PO to shipment
10. Payment terms accepted (LC, supplier credit, cash)
11. Intellectual property — is this a protected variety?
12. Dispute resolution and applicable law
