Standards and certifications are the shortest way to reduce technical risk in international procurement. This guide summarises the standards most commonly referenced in commercial agricultural projects. Requirements vary by project, jurisdiction and product — obtain professional regulatory advice before purchasing.
Does SeedMatchGroup certify suppliers?

This depends entirely on the destination country and product. CE is required for machinery placed on the EU market, phytosanitary certificates are required for cross-border seed movement, and specific food-safety schemes are required by many retailers. The two most-referenced global standards for seed procurement:
- ISTA (International Seed Testing Association) — germination, purity and moisture testing. Ask for the ISTA Orange International Certificate for each lot.
- OECD Seed Schemes — varietal certification for seed traded internationally. Ask for the OECD label class (pre-basic, basic, certified).
Equipment and manufacturing standards
For greenhouse structures, irrigation and processing equipment:
- ISO 9001 — quality management system at the manufacturer.
- CE marking — European conformity for machinery, pressure equipment and electrical safety.
- UL / ETL — North-American electrical safety.
- NEN 3859 / Venlo standard — greenhouse structural design (Dutch reference standard).
- ISO 14001 — environmental management (increasingly required by DFIs).
Food safety and market-access standards
Relevant where the project feeds into an export supply chain:
- GLOBALG.A.P. — on-farm good agricultural practice.
- HACCP — hazard analysis in post-harvest and processing.
- BRCGS / IFS — retail-grade food safety for packing and processing.
- Organic (EU 2018/848, USDA NOP, JAS) — for certified-organic production.
What to ask suppliers for
Request certificates in the supplier's name (not the parent group), check the certifying body is accredited (IAF or ISTA), and verify the certificate is in date. A certificate number that cannot be looked up on the certifier's public register is not a valid certificate.
