How do you calculate an agricultural carbon footprint?
The footprint sums Scope 1 (on-farm fuel), Scope 2 (purchased electricity) and input-related emissions (fertilizer, crop protection, packaging), each multiplied by its emission factor and reported as tCO₂e per year and per tonne of product.
- Nitrogen fertilizer is usually the single largest input emission line.
- Scope 2 depends entirely on the national grid emission factor.
- Intensity (kgCO₂e per tonne produced) is the metric buyers benchmark.
