How the numbers are built

  1. Plants required = planted area × plant density.
  2. Seeds required = plants ÷ (germination × purity × establishment). Each loss stage compounds, so quoting seed against plants alone always under-orders.
  3. Seed weight = seeds ÷ (seeds per gram × 1,000).
  4. Effective cost per usable kilogram = quoted price ÷ (germination × purity). This is the figure to compare between offers — not the headline price per kilogram.

Worked example: 10 ha of tomato at 22,000 plants/ha, 92% germination, 99% purity and 90% establishment needs about 268,000 seeds — roughly 0.9 kg at 300 seeds per gram. At a quoted US$400/kg, the effective cost per usable kilogram is about US$439.
