Cucumber Greenhouse Project in the UAE
Cucumber is one of the few crops that pays back UAE cooling economics: a fast 60–75 day cycle, high kilos per square metre and strong year-round local demand from retail and hospitality substituting imports.
The specification is high-tech by necessity. Summer conditions of 45 °C at 60–80% relative humidity mean semi-closed or pad-and-fan cooled glass or polycarbonate houses with dehumidification, closed hydroponics on desalinated supply, and condensate plus drain recovery to hold water cost down.
Because energy and water dominate OPEX, the deciding engineering choices are cooling strategy, dehumidification capacity, screen package and how much of the electrical load PV can offset.

Closed hydroponic production with three to four cycles per year plans for 450–750 tonnes per hectare annually, subject to cooling performance through July and August.
Uncooled tunnels lose the summer window entirely and produce for only part of the year. At UAE water and energy prices the cost per marketable kilo is usually worse than a high-tech house running year round.
Supply is desalinated or RO-treated. Condensate capture from the cooling system, full drain recirculation and UV or ozone disinfection are base scope, not upgrades, and reject-brine handling is designed in from the start.
Mainly parthenocarpic Beit Alpha and long Dutch types selected for CEA vigour, fruit quality at high light and tolerance to powdery mildew and CGMMV.
