Tomato Greenhouse Project in China
China is the largest protected-cropping market in the world, but 'greenhouse' there covers everything from a passive solar house in Shandong to a Dutch-specification Venlo block outside Beijing. The first decision on any project is which of those two economics you are actually building.
North of the Yangtze the design driver is winter: heating demand of roughly 200 kWh/m²/yr at high-tech reference, thermal screens, and either the passive thermal mass of a solar greenhouse or a heating plant with heat pumps and buffer storage. In the humid east and south the driver flips to ventilation, dehumidification and shade.
Local steel, glazing and equipment supply keep the CAPEX factor below Western Europe, which is why many investors specify imported climate control and glazing over a locally fabricated structure. That split scope needs to be defined precisely in the RFQ or bids become impossible to compare.
How much does a commercial tomato greenhouse cost per hectare in China?
Indicative planning ranges are USD 450,000–1.6 million per hectare. Locally fabricated multi-span with basic fertigation sits near the bottom; Venlo glass with heating, screens, CO₂ and full climate control sits at the top. Domestic manufacturing keeps costs roughly 15% below the European reference base.
