Greenhouse Project Budget Guide & Calculator

Separate equipment and installed CAPEX, running OPEX and operating cash reserves; compare the funding need with committed equity and approved debt. Build a cost breakdown, test ROI assumptions and align the tender timeline before a human-reviewed project request.

Estimate only — not a quotation. Outputs are indicative planning ranges based on the values you enter and typical commercial benchmarks. Real pricing, specifications and lead times vary by country, site conditions and supplier, and are confirmed only in written offers collected through a private RFQ.

Greenhouse project budget guide: CAPEX, OPEX & financing

A greenhouse funding plan needs more than an equipment price: separate the installed investment, running costs and cash needed before dependable revenue. Then compare that funding need with confirmed equity and approved debt. This is a planning calculation, not a quotation, financing offer or ROI guarantee.

1. Define a comparable CAPEX scope

Record crop, covered area (m²), country/site, growing season, temperature targets, water analysis, power capacity and start date. Split structure/covering, heating/cooling, irrigation/fertigation, water treatment/storage, controls/IoT, growing systems and post-harvest equipment. Record quantities, quote currency, validity, inclusions and exclusions for each line.

Add freight, customs, local transport, civil works, installation, engineering and commissioning separately. Confirm local taxes and permits with qualified local advisers. Choose contingency from specific unresolved risks rather than treating a percentage as a universal standard.

2. Build an operating-cost budget

Energy: kWh × applicable tariff, plus demand/standing charges. Water: m³ × confirmed delivered-water cost. Seeds, fertilizer and substrate: planned quantities × dated quotations. Add labour, maintenance, packaging, transport and overheads without assuming universal crop yields or input rates.

Use seasonal costs where heating, cooling or irrigation varies. The calculator below annualizes an average month × 12; it is not a crop-cycle model. Test energy, freight and commissioning-delay cases in the CAPEX–OPEX–ROI scenario calculator.

3. Match finance to the tender timeline

List deposit, manufacturing, shipment, installation and acceptance payments against the supplier's written milestones. Align equity availability and any lender drawdown conditions before committing; include fees and construction interest only once. Keep operating liquidity separate from annual expenses. SeedMatch is not a lender or credit adviser; buyer service is free and funding is not guaranteed.

Operating reserve & funding calculator

Uses the investment envelope above ($589,860), including its contingency and financing allowance. All added amounts are in USD; no live exchange-rate or tax feed is used. Blank added fields count as zero, not as verified costs. These additional inputs are not saved or included in the existing CAPEX exports.

Use your seasonal operating budget: energy, water, labour, seeds, fertilizer, substrate, maintenance, packing and overheads.

Choose the cash buffer from your crop/start-up calendar and payment terms; no duration is recommended by default.

Land, studies, permits or construction finance not already included above. Do not enter the same cost twice.

Include only funds confirmed available for this phase.

Unapproved applications and indicative financing discussions are not committed funds.

Your funding breakdown

Total funding need
$589,860
Committed equity + approved debt
$0
Unfunded amount
$589,860
Funding above this budget

Annual OPEX = monthly OPEX × 12. Reserve = monthly OPEX × reserve months. Funding need = planner investment + other upfront costs + reserve. Gap = max(0, funding need − committed equity − approved debt). Annual OPEX is not added a second time. This excludes debt repayment schedules, tax effects, revenue, discounted cash flow and financing approval checks.

4. Turn the budget into a reviewed project brief

Attach dated cost evidence, scope exclusions, site constraints, crop calendar and payment milestones to your request. SeedMatch reviews and organizes the brief before managing supplier outreach and follow-up; this is not an automatic marketplace. Commercial CAPEX requests start at USD 250,000; qualification does not establish feasibility or funding approval.

Frequently asked questions

The planner builds a full commercial greenhouse budget across four layers: equipment (structure, climate, irrigation, hydroponics, automation, energy, post-harvest), international and inland logistics (freight, duties, insurance, clearance), and project costs (civil works, foundations, electrical, engineering, commissioning, training, spare parts, financing and contingency). It produces a live investment total, a category breakdown and a cash-flow envelope.

The prefilled equipment amounts are illustrative placeholders, not verified market prices or supplier quotations. Replace them with dated, scope-matched evidence. Site, soil, utilities, imported content and freight can change the budget. The operating-reserve calculator uses your own amounts and makes no yield, ROI or financing guarantee.

Yes. Every input is auto-saved to your browser continuously. You can also save the current state as a named project, duplicate it to compare scenarios (technology, country of origin, financing structure, currency) and reopen any project later from the dashboard on this page.

No. A feasibility study models agronomy, land, water rights, permitting, workforce, market pricing and financial statements. The planner sizes the investment envelope and procurement categories so your feasibility team, EPC or lender receives a coherent CAPEX plan to stress-test.

SeedMatchGroup is supplier-neutral. Submit your project request; the team reviews and organizes the brief before managing supplier outreach and follow-up. It is not an automatic marketplace and a budget does not establish supplier availability or financing approval. Buyer service is free.

Yes. The catalog covers hydroponic gutters, NFT systems, nursery propagation, pumping stations, filtration, cold storage and packing houses in addition to greenhouse structures. Add or remove line items to match the exact scope of your project.

USD, EUR, GBP, AED, SAR, ZAR, NGN, KES and MAD. Enter inputs in your project currency; totals and the export report follow the same currency so procurement, finance and lenders read one consistent number.

Use the Export CSV button for a spreadsheet-ready file, or the Print / Save-as-PDF button to generate a branded budget report for internal review, lenders or board packs. All information stays in your browser — nothing is uploaded until you explicitly send an RFQ.

CAPEX is the installed project investment. OPEX is the running-cost budget. The operating reserve is cash set aside for a buyer-selected number of months, not a second annual expense. The funding calculator adds the planner investment, other upfront costs and reserve, then subtracts committed equity and approved debt. Added operating and funding inputs are not saved or included in the CAPEX exports.

Confirm crop, area, site constraints, water and power evidence, equipment scope, quote validity, freight and tax exclusions, installation acceptance criteria and payment milestones. Match those milestones to actual funding availability; use the linked tender timeline and CAPEX–OPEX–ROI scenarios to test assumptions, not to guarantee returns.

Turning this estimate into a request? The greenhouse systems request builder lists what changes a quote — structure, cover, climate and installation scope — and opens a pre-filled request that our team reviews before any supplier is contacted.

Understanding the values

What each choice in this calculator means, and how the options differ in practice.

Ranges, not points
Planning figures are ranges because scope, site and market move the real number. Read both ends of the range before deciding.
What is excluded
Land, site works, utilities and working capital are usually outside per-unit bands. Check the exclusions before comparing two estimates.

Illustration only, not a real project or quotation. This is the structure, equipment and site-works budget for the example greenhouse, not the price of this calculator’s individual system, seeds or inputs, and not a result calculated from your entries. Excludes land, permits, packhouse, financing costs and working capital.

Based on the published commercial greenhouse cost benchmark. Written offers require a private project review; commercial projects start from USD 250K.

What can change the result?

This is a preliminary planning estimate based on the values you entered. The variables below usually move the outcome most, and should be confirmed with an agronomist, engineer and supplier offers before final design.

  • Growing area and layout — hectares alone are not a greenhouse specification
  • Greenhouse type and technology level (tunnel, naturally ventilated, high-tech)
  • Structure specification, wind and snow loads, and site civil works
  • Energy and utility tariffs, plus tariff escalation over time
  • Financing terms, contingency and currency movement

Questions this calculator answers

Method and decision path

How to use this result in a commercial project

Use the result to test scope and compare scenarios. It is not a design, agronomic prescription, financing offer or supplier quotation.

  1. 1. Enter site evidence

Replace defaults with measured area, climate, water, energy, crop and commercial assumptions.

  2. 2. Test scenarios

Change one assumption at a time and record the effect on capacity, cost, demand or return.

  3. 3. Validate the duty

Ask the relevant agronomist, engineer or financial adviser to check the inputs and constraints.

  4. 4. Prepare a private RFQ

Carry the confirmed scope into a human-reviewed brief so written offers can be compared on the same basis.

Final specifications, performance, prices, supplier participation and timing depend on the site and written supplier responses; none is guaranteed by this calculator.
